Workplace charging is a different job to putting a charger on the side of a house. The charger is the cheap part. What decides the cost, and whether the scheme works at all, is your incoming supply and how you manage load across several sockets at once.
We install workplace and commercial EV charging across Cannock, Stafford, Lichfield, Walsall, Rugeley, Wolverhampton and the surrounding area. All work is certified to BS 7671 and we have been trading since 2015.
The supply is the constraint, not the charger
A single 7kW socket draws around 32A. Put four in a staff car park and you have added 128A of load to a building that was sized for lighting, sockets and whatever plant you already run.
So the first thing we do is not pick a charger. It is work out what your supply can actually take once your existing demand is accounted for. That assessment is what tells you whether you need:
- Nothing – the spare capacity is there and the job is cable and containment
- Load management – the chargers talk to each other and share the available capacity, so four sockets never pull four sockets’ worth at once
- A supply upgrade – a DNO application, which carries its own cost and its own timescale, neither of which we control
Most sites we look at land on load management. It is considerably cheaper than an upgrade and for staff parking, where cars sit for seven or eight hours, nobody notices the difference.
What else has to be decided
- Who charges. Staff only, visitors, fleet, or a mix. This drives access control and whether you need RFID or app authorisation.
- Whether you recharge for the electricity. If you do, the units need to meter and report per user, which narrows the hardware choice.
- Where the cars actually park. Cable route, trenching, ducting, bollard protection and making good afterwards are often a bigger line on the quote than the chargers.
- Future sockets. It is far cheaper to lay ducting for eight now and fit four than to dig the car park twice.
The Workplace Charging Scheme
The government’s Workplace Charging Scheme is open until 31 March 2027. It is worth up to £500 per socket for installations completed from 1 April 2026, and a business can apply for up to 40 sockets across its sites.
The grant has to be claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer, and the voucher has to be in place before the work is done – not afterwards. We will tell you at survey stage whether your site qualifies and how it affects the quote. We will not build a grant you have not been awarded into a headline price.
What it costs
Workplace installations are quoted per site. There is no useful headline figure, because the difference between a two-socket job on an existing spare way and an eight-socket job that needs trenching across a car park is most of the cost.
What we will do is break the quote into supply work, groundworks and containment, hardware, and commissioning, so you can see where the money is going and decide what to phase.
For comparison, a single domestic charger is £950 + VAT up to 15 metres and £1,250 + VAT up to 25 metres. Workplace work does not scale from those figures, but they give you a sense of how we price – fixed where it can be fixed, itemised where it cannot.
Certification and handover
You get the electrical installation certificate for the work, the commissioning records for each unit, and the information your insurer and your landlord will ask for. If the chargers are networked, we hand over the back-office access rather than keeping it.
Landlords and leased premises
If you lease, the supply and the car park may not be yours to alter. We will tell you early if consent is going to be needed rather than finding out at installation. It is the most common reason a workplace scheme stalls.
