Solar panels in Lichfield: read this before you get quotes

Lichfield is not a straightforward place to fit solar, and any installer who tells you otherwise has not looked properly.

Most solar installations in England fall under permitted development and need no planning permission. Two things change that, and Lichfield has both.

Listed buildings

Listed building consent is required for any photovoltaic installation on a listed building. Lichfield has a high concentration of them, particularly around the Cathedral Close and the older parts of the city centre. Consent is more likely where the panels are not visible from the street, cause no structural damage, and the installation is fully reversible.

Conservation areas and Article 4 Directions

A conservation area on its own usually still allows permitted development. But where an Article 4 Direction has been made, those rights are removed or restricted and planning permission is required. Lichfield District Council is the authority to check with, and it is worth doing before you spend money on a system design.

If your property is listed, or you think you may be in a conservation area, tell us at the enquiry stage. We would rather establish it up front than survey a roof we cannot fit. For properties outside those constraints, which is most of WS13 and WS14, solar and battery storage are usually straightforward permitted development.

EICRs and older property

A lot of Lichfield housing predates modern wiring standards, and period property throws up things newer stock does not: rubber or lead-sheathed cable still in place, missing main protective bonding, borrowed neutrals from old lighting alterations, and consumer units that have been added to over the years rather than replaced.

An Electrical Installation Condition Report assesses the condition of the fixed wiring, consumer unit, sockets and circuits, and tells you what, if anything, actually needs doing.

Landlords in England are legally required to have an EICR carried out at least every five years. Homeowners are generally advised every ten years, or sooner when a property changes hands. Domestic EICRs from £220 + VAT.

Consumer unit changes, showers and small repairs

A large part of what we do day to day is not big projects. Consumer unit replacements are probably our single most common job, and we carry out a steady stream of them across Cannock and the surrounding towns. Replacing an old fuse board with a modern unit with RCD or RCBO protection is usually the single biggest improvement you can make to an older installation.

We also cover reactive work and small repairs, including:

Pull cord switches and electric showers are two of the most common things to fail in a domestic property, and both are jobs where people are often told they need far more work than they actually do. If it is a switch, we will replace the switch.
