Industrial electrical work is not commercial work on a bigger scale. The loads are different, the supplies are three phase, and the cost of getting it wrong is measured in downtime rather than inconvenience.
We carry out industrial electrical installation and maintenance across Cannock, Stafford, Lichfield, Walsall, Rugeley and the wider Midlands. All work is certified to BS 7671. Trading since 2015.
What we do
- Machine and plant supplies. Dedicated three-phase supplies, isolation and local control for new or relocated machinery.
- Distribution boards and sub-mains. New boards, board changes and sub-main runs to extensions, mezzanines and outbuildings.
- Containment. Tray, basket, trunking and conduit installed to take the cable you have now and the cable you will add later.
- Lighting. High bay and LED replacement schemes, including the emergency lighting that has to go with them.
- Fault finding. Intermittent faults on production plant, traced with test equipment rather than by replacing parts until it stops.
- Inspection and testing. Periodic inspection of industrial installations, phased so production keeps running.
The supply is usually the constraint
Most industrial enquiries start with a machine and end with a question about capacity. Before anything gets specified we establish what your incoming supply will actually take once existing demand is accounted for — measured over a period, not estimated from a nameplate.
That assessment decides whether the job is cable and containment, load management, or a DNO application for a supply upgrade. The last of those carries a cost and a timescale that neither we nor you control, and it is far better to find out at the start.
Shutdowns and phasing
Very little industrial work can be done with everything running. The planning matters more than the electrical work:
- What genuinely has to be dead, and what can stay live
- Whether it happens over a weekend, a shutdown week, or in stages across several visits
- What the restart sequence is, and who signs off that plant is safe to re-energise
- What happens if something does not come back cleanly — agreed before we start, not improvised at 6am
We would rather spend an hour agreeing that than explain an overrun afterwards.
Three phase
Three-phase work brings its own considerations — phase rotation on motor loads, balancing across phases so one is not carrying the site, and harmonics from variable speed drives and LED lighting that can load the neutral more than people expect. Where we see that on a site we will tell you, because it is the kind of thing that shows up as nuisance tripping long before anyone connects it to the cause.
Emergency lighting
Industrial sites are where emergency lighting is most often wrong, because the building has been altered around the production process and the lighting was never revisited. Racking goes up and blocks a luminaire. A mezzanine adds a stairwell nobody covered. A fire exit gets relocated.
BS 5266 requires two separate routines: a short monthly function test, and an annual test that runs the system on battery for its full rated duration, usually three hours, with every fitting checked at the end rather than the start. A battery that holds for twenty minutes and dies at ninety passes the monthly test and fails the annual one.
Both have to be recorded. A system in full working order with no logbook still fails an inspection.
On an industrial site the annual test needs planning, because after a full discharge the batteries need around 24 hours to recover their rated duration. We schedule it around a shutdown or the end of a shift rather than running a three-hour drain on an occupied building mid-week. Where we find fittings missing rather than simply failed, we price those separately so you can see what is testing and what is new work.
Certification and records
You get an Electrical Installation Certificate for new work or an Electrical Installation Condition Report for periodic inspection, with full schedules of test results. For industrial sites the schedules matter: they are what the next engineer works from, and what your insurer will ask for.
Where we install new distribution, you get an updated board schedule and drawings that reflect what is actually there rather than what was originally designed.
Why we are not the cheapest
Industrial work is easy to underprice by ignoring the parts that are not electrical — access equipment, permits, out-of-hours working and the time spent planning a shutdown properly. We put those in the quote at the start.
